Herman Maril had a distinguished career of more than sixty years as an artist
and educator. Maril was long associated with communities of artists in Baltimore
and Provincetown; however, it would be a mistake to think of him as a regionalist
painter. Maril's work addresses themes that in both style and subject are universal
in nature. While in one sense they are timeless, in another they capture the
spirit of the age in which they were created. From early in his career Maril's
work was highly regarded. Duncan Phillips was one of his early patrons, and
today the Phillips Collection contains thirteen paintings by Herman Maril.
