On Thursday 4 May 2006 an exhibition of oil
paintings by noted twentieth century American representational
artist Philip Malicoat will open at ACME Fine Art in Boston. The
exhibition will open with a reception between 6:00 and 8:00 p.m.
that evening.
Philip Malicoat was long associated with the art colony in Provincetown,
Massachusetts. After studying at the John Heron Art Institute in
Indiana, Malicoat moved to Provincetown in 1929 to study with Charles
Hawthorne, and went on to study with Henry Hensche and Edwin Dickinson.
As an active member of the Provincetown Art Association, Malicoat
frequently exhibited his work there; however, his work was also
exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, the Corcoran
Gallery of Art, the National Academy of Design, and the Art Institute
of Chicago, among numerous other public venues. Malicoat is well
known for his symbolically rich studio paintings as well as for
his highly atmospheric landscapes many of which were painted en
plein air.
ACME Fine Art’s upcoming exhibition will focus on Malicoat’s
landscape paintings, and will feature a fine group of exquisitely
rendered oil paintings that were painted between 1958 and 1976.
All of the paintings comprising the exhibition have been in the
artist’s family since their creation. Despite their vintage,
many of the canvases will be seen publicly for the first time as
a part of this exhibition. The subject matter will include Malicoat’s
retreat in coastal Maine, travel images from France and Greece,
and of course, numerous images capturing the magical atmosphere
of his beloved Cape Cod. Several of the Cape Cod landscapes were
painted in Malicoat’s dune shack in what is now the Provincelands
portion of the National Seashore. All of the work conveys the artist’s
deeply personal connection to the land and his heartfelt sense
of place.
